Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact
IPMS is currently pursuing legislation to adopt the Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact (IPMLC). This will make it easier for podiatrists in other states to come practice in Iowa, simplifying the licensing process and expanding care in our state.
As Iowa heads into the 2026 legislative session, attention returns to HF 930, legislation establishing the Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact. Originally introduced as HSB 291, the bill successfully advanced through both the State Government subcommittee and the full committee with unanimous support—but did not secure placement on the House debate calendar prior to the second funnel deadline.
Practicing across state lines has long presented significant challenges for podiatric physicians. The current system requires practitioners to navigate multiple licensing processes—each with its own paperwork, fees, and timelines—creating substantial barriers to care delivery.
These barriers particularly impact:
- Patients in medically underserved communities
- Individuals with complex conditions requiring specialized care
- Those who could benefit from podiatric telemedicine services
The forthcoming Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact represents a significant advancement for the profession and the patients we serve. This innovative program will allow qualified podiatric physicians to practice in multiple states through a streamlined application process.
Why the Compact Matters
The IPMLC expands access to podiatric medical care, safeguards the public, and streamlines licensure for podiatric physicians and licensing boards. Through one application, podiatrists can obtain expedited licensure in multiple states, making it easier to serve patients across the country. States become members of the Compact by passing legislation adopting the model language.
Benefits for Patients
- Expanded access to care: Increases availability of podiatric services, especially in rural and underserved areas
- Specialized Care Continuity: Supports access to coordinated, high-level care for patients with complex conditions, close to home
- Assured Patient Safety: Guarantees care from podiatrists who meet high licensing standards
Benefits for States & Local Hospitals
- Preserves State Authority: Upholds individual state podiatric practice acts and full regulatory oversight
- Improved Operational Efficiency: Streamlines licensure processes through shared technology and centralized data systems, reducing costs
- Ensures Accountability: Compact-licensed podiatrists must comply fully with all laws and regulations in each state where they practice
- Stronger Workforce & Recruitment: Reduces gaps by expanding access to qualified podiatric physicians across Compact states
- Trusted Quality Standards: Compact physicians meet strict benchmarks, ensuring high-quality care.
Leadership Opportunity for Iowa
Joining the Compact early positions Iowa as a leader in licensure modernization. As a foundational state, Iowa will help shape the rules and procedures for the Compact Commission’s operation.
With over 18,000 podiatric physicians nationwide—and more than half already licensed in multiple states—the Compact offers a practical solution to meet patient needs while maintaining rigorous standards. By joining this initiative, Iowa can lead in improving healthcare access and outcomes—especially limb preservation—through streamlined licensure and interstate collaboration.
